This Pineapple Spinach Smoothie Bowl combines the tropical flavors of Hawaii with the nutritional boost of a green smoothie. Filled with pineapple, bananas, and spinach and topped with shredded coconut, macadamia nuts, and mango, this smoothie bowl offers immunity-boosting ingredients with a tropical flair.
Pineapple Spinach Smoothie Bowl Inspiration
The inspiration for this delicious pineapple treat is beautiful Hawaii. Hawaii holds a special place in my heart because my grandmother spent her teen years living on Oahu and loved it there. And yes, I do too!
At one time, most of the world’s pineapple came from Hawaii. Although this is no longer true, the pineapple is still a symbol of Hawaii for many people. In fact, the Dole Pineapple Plantation is one of the most popular tourist attractions on Oahu.
Of course, pineapples aren’t the only fruit Hawaii is known for. Mango, banana, coconut, star fruit, strawberry guava, and papaya are also popular in Hawaii. You’ll see that many of them made their way into this delicious smoothie bowl.
Smoothie Bowl Ingredients, Nutrition, and Alternatives
This smoothie bowl contains loads of antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber. It’s a great source of Vitamins A, C, B-6, and K as well as potassium, magnesium, and manganese.
The main ingredients are both delicious and nutritious:
- Pineapple — filled with antioxidants that help fight disease and boost your immunity
- Spinach — famous as a vegan source of iron and calcium, spinach also contains, magnesium, potassium, and folate
- Bananas — a great source of potassium, fiber, and antioxidants as well as vitamins B6 and C
I used So Delicious Unsweetened Vanilla Coconut Milk, but almond milk could also work well. So Delicious is available refrigerated or as a shelf-stable beverage. This #vegan Pineapple Spinach Smoothie Bowl -- topped with shredded coconut, macadamia nuts, and mango -- offers a delicious immunity boost with tropical flair! #Smoothie #EatHealthy
I didn’t add any sweetener to my bowl, but if you like your smoothies on the sweeter side you can either add a teaspoon of honey to the smoothie mixture or drizzle the honey on top of your bowl. I prefer either raw honey or Manuka honey for the health benefits, but your preferred sweetener is fine as well. Manuka honey is native to New Zealand and is noted for its antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Plus, it’s delicious!
If you would like to increase the protein in your bowl, you can replace the coconut milk with dairy milk or soy milk. Optionally, add some protein powder or plain Greek yogurt. Keep in mind that this will change the consistency of your smoothie so you might need to add more liquid.
Smoothie Bowl Toppings
Have fun with your toppings! You can choose toppings that add a nutritional boost, provide a dash more sweetness, or enhance the tropical vibe of this bowl.
Suggested topping include:
- shredded coconut
- macadamia nuts
- mango chunks
- papaya chunks
- white chia seeds
- sliced bananas
- sliced pineapple
- cacao nibs
For this bowl, I choose shredded coconut, macadamia nuts, and mango because they represent Hawaii.
Feel free to get creative and customize your smoothie bowl to your own tastes. Or simply use what you have available or what’s in season.
Preparing Your Pineapple Spinach Smoothie Bowl
Let your frozen banana and pineapple thaw for a few minutes for a better blending experience. Although I normally chop and freeze my own bananas and pineapple, you can purchase frozen fruit to simplify the process. The brand O Organics sells individual packages of frozen bananas, pineapple, and mangos that are good to keep on hand.
When freezing your own bananas, be sure to let them ripen before slicing and freezing. You don’t want to freeze green bananas.
Combine your ingredients in a blender, pour into a bowl, top, and serve. If you like your bowl really cold, you can place it in the freezer for a few minutes before topping and serving.
In most cases, you’ll want to serve your smoothie bowl in the obvious container: a bowl. For a special occasion, you can also serve it in hollowed pineapple boat.
